British Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford Set to Return Home

Published:

After enduring a challenging 12-year period, Lindsay Sandiford, a British grandmother, is poised to return to the UK following an unexpected change in plans. Sandiford was sentenced to death in 2013 for smuggling cocaine valued at $2.14 million (£1.6 million) in her suitcase from Thailand to Bali. In Indonesia, severe punishments, including death sentences, are common for drug-related offenses.

In Indonesia, convicted individuals face execution by firing squad, with the commander delivering a fatal shot if needed. Many inmates spend over a decade on death row before execution. Sandiford, a former legal secretary, spent her time in custody knitting goods to raise funds for her legal battles and teaching fellow inmates how to knit.

Sandiford’s prolonged stay on death row took a toll on her, leading to a friendship with Heather Mack, known as the “suitcase murderer.” Mack, who served time for killing her mother, shared that Sandiford became increasingly withdrawn as she witnessed the execution of other inmates.

Despite expressing a desire to die while on death row, Sandiford, now in her late 60s, is set to be repatriated to the UK along with another Brit, Shahab Shahabadi, as part of an agreement with the Indonesian government. Bali’s recent relaxation of drug trafficking laws played a role in Sandiford’s potential release, given her good behavior during her imprisonment.

As Indonesia eases its strict anti-drug laws, Sandiford’s release aligns with the nation’s recent trend of freeing prisoners serving similar sentences. Sandiford’s confidence in her impending release is evident as she has started donating her clothes to fellow inmates. Foreign Office officials have been actively involved in her case, with Sandiford now hopeful for her freedom.
