British Gas Energy Trust Reopens Fund for Struggling Households

Published:

Thousands of households facing financial difficulties could receive up to £1,700 in energy assistance from British Gas, regardless of whether they are current customers. The British Gas Energy Trust has reopened its fund for Individuals and Families, catering to both pre-payment and credit customers who are in energy debt.

To qualify, pre-payment customers must owe between £50 and £1,700, while credit customers must owe between £250 and £1,700 in energy debt. Additionally, households with an income below £18,723 or residing with a disabled individual receiving disability benefits, Carers Allowance, or in a household with three or more children are eligible.

Applicants must seek guidance from a free money advice charity like Citizens Advice before applying. Those who have been declined assistance by their energy supplier or have received a grant from British Gas Energy Trust in the last two years are ineligible. British Gas Energy Trust’s Director, Jessica Taplin, expressed satisfaction in reopening the fund to help struggling households cope with high energy costs.

Meanwhile, energy bills have risen, with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,720 to £1,755 for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit. The cap will remain until December 31 for standard variable rate (SVR) tariff customers. While there is no total cap on energy costs, the Ofgem price cap restricts charges for gas and electricity units and standing charges linked to energy network connections based on average household consumption assumptions.
