A courageous young man has made a bold move by renouncing his right to anonymity in court to directly confront the individual who sexually assaulted him at the age of 11.
Devin O’Donnell, now 19, faced Joseph Campbell, 63, during a sentencing hearing where he expressed his decision to no longer carry the burden of guilt, asserting that he is taking back control of his narrative and life. O’Donnell, stepson of Campbell, read aloud his impactful statement before Campbell received an eight and a half-year prison sentence for rape at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
O’Donnell deliberately chose to reveal his identity so that Campbell, residing in Daingean, Co Offaly, Ireland, could be publicly identified. Despite Campbell’s denial of the charges and refusal to accept the jury’s decision, O’Donnell bravely spoke out, stating, “You didn’t just harm me at that moment, you altered my perception of the world. You instilled silence within me, making me feel muted by shame for a long time. But I am not the frightened child I once was.”
He continued, “I’m speaking out now, not because I have completely healed, but because I am making a conscious effort to advocate for myself, even when it’s challenging. Your actions robbed me of parts of my life that I can never retrieve. However, you did not take everything from me. You did not take away my resilience. You did not steal my future. You did not destroy my capacity to heal.”
During a trial in June, Campbell was found guilty of section 4 rape, specifically anal rape, at O’Donnell’s residence in October 2017. Additional charges of sexual assault by Campbell against the victim in December 2021 were considered during the sentencing.
Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring, in sentencing Campbell, acknowledged O’Donnell’s strength in facing numerous adversities in his life, emphasizing that no child should endure such betrayal from a trusted figure like Campbell. Justice Ring highlighted O’Donnell’s support system and expressed hope that positive life events would overshadow the trauma he experienced.
Regarding Campbell’s actions, Justice Ring pointed out aggravating factors, including his breach of trust as a grandfatherly figure in the family structure and his lack of remorse or empathy towards the victim. Despite imposing an initial 11-year sentence, Justice Ring reduced it to 10 years, with the final 18 months suspended to ease Campbell’s reintegration into society post-release. Additionally, a no-contact order with O’Donnell for five years after his release was issued.
Reflecting on his past, O’Donnell shared, “The trauma from my childhood ordeal has never left me. It wasn’t a fleeting moment of pain; it embedded fear, shame, confusion, and heartache that have haunted me ever since. I was a mere child, unaware of the situation, feeling small, frightened, and violated. You stripped away my safety, my innocence, my self-assurance.”
He added, “Growing up, I felt alienated, masking my pain with a facade of normalcy while battling inner turmoil. I felt tainted, shattered, believing I was flawed. Worst of all, I blamed myself, thinking I provoked it. No child should bear such self-blame.”
