Ahead of the upcoming Aston Villa versus Maccabi Tel Aviv match in the Europa League at Villa Park, several schools in Birmingham are closing early. This decision comes after West Midlands Police categorized the match as “high risk” following a thorough assessment. Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were previously banned from attending due to safety concerns, prompting criticism from politicians, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protest groups are expected to gather, accompanied by a large police presence to ensure the safety of football fans and locals.
International criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza has led to calls for UEFA and FIFA to consider banning Israeli national teams from competitions. UN advisory experts have even suggested sporting sanctions following claims of genocide in Gaza by a UN commission of inquiry.
In response to the anticipated protests and potential disruptions, schools like Mansfield Green E-ACT Primary Academy are closing early. The academy, near Villa Park, will dismiss students at 2pm instead of the usual 3:15pm. BOA Creative, Digital, and Performing Arts Academy is also reportedly planning an early closure at 1:15pm due to the expected protests.
Former Labour MP Lord Ian Austin criticized the early school closures, emphasizing the importance of education over tensions. E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy explained that the decision was made in consultation with local authorities to ensure student safety and minimize disruptions. They acknowledged other schools taking similar precautions and thanked parents for their understanding.
