BioWare Studio Shut Down by Electronic Arts

Published:

Electronic Arts, a prominent video game publisher, has announced the closure of BioWare, a well-known game development studio based in Edmonton, after more than 30 years of operation. The decision to shut down BioWare came after reports indicated that Electronic Arts is laying off around 400 employees, including approximately 50 from BioWare. The cancellation of the upcoming installment of the popular Mass Effect series, which would have been the fifth since its inception in 2007, was also confirmed.

Established in 1995, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2007. Trent Oster, co-founder of BioWare, expressed his sentiments on the closure, stating, “It’s a pretty sad day. I mean, 30 plus years ago we built something I think was pretty awesome. And it’s pretty sad to see the end of the dream.” The closure comes after Electronic Arts finalized a $55 billion US sale of its business to various entities, including Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF and investment firms Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners, led by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite efforts to diversify into multiplayer shooters, BioWare’s release of Anthem in 2019 deviated from its strength in creating captivating single-player narratives, ultimately failing to attract a dedicated player base like popular online games such as Fortnite and Overwatch. Recent entries in BioWare’s flagship franchises, including 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, received mixed reviews and left many fans disappointed. A new installment of Mass Effect was under development before BioWare’s closure was announced.

BioWare earned acclaim for its immersive role-playing games, ranging from fantasy epics like Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age to science fiction adventures such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. Oster, now the CEO of gaming company Beamdog, reminisced about BioWare’s early days, describing it as a magical experience. He reflected on the company’s growth from a small team to a global leader in game development.

Representatives from Electronic Arts were unavailable for immediate comment on the layoffs. BioWare expressed gratitude to its community, acknowledging the impact players had on their games and the shared experiences created over the years. The studio emphasized the significance of the journey and the memories forged through its titles, inviting fans to celebrate the legacy of BioWare.
