Android users are being cautioned to remain vigilant as a new concerning cyberattack has emerged. This latest threat, known as DroidLock, is causing alarm as it locks phones upon infection, demanding a ransom or threatening permanent file destruction.
The security team at Zimperium discovered DroidLock, which is currently affecting Android users in certain parts of Europe. The malware is being spread through deceptive websites promoting fraudulent applications that mimic legitimate software. Once installed, DroidLock seizes control of devices, monitoring screen unlock codes.
Hackers gain access to this information and can alter the code to lock users out. Victims receive a screen overlay instructing them to pay a ransom to prevent file deletion, accompanied by a countdown timer for compliance.
Zimperium stated, “The ZLabs research team has identified a new threat campaign targeting Android users.” DroidLock, more accurately classified as ransomware, spreads through phishing sites and can take over devices by displaying a ransomware-like interface and unlawfully obtaining app lock credentials.
To protect against DroidLock, Android users in the UK and elsewhere should only download applications from official sources like Google’s Play Store. Individuals urged to sideload software should verify the developer’s authenticity and avoid downloading suspicious content.
