A man hailed as a hero for confronting a train attacker to protect passengers downplayed his actions, stating he simply did what anyone else would have done. Stephen Crean, a Nottingham Forest supporter returning from a match, found himself in the midst of a mass stabbing incident on a train journey to London. Upon hearing passengers alerting others about a man with a knife, Stephen found himself face-to-face with the attacker after unsuccessful attempts to seek refuge in crowded areas of the train.
In a tense confrontation, the assailant threatened Stephen repeatedly with the knife. Stephen managed to grab the blade, resulting in severe hand injuries. Subsequently, he sustained cuts on his lower back and buttock before finding temporary safety in an empty train restroom. The train was rerouted to a station, where Stephen received medical attention for his injuries.
Despite being labeled a hero, Stephen remains modest, emphasizing that he was just trying to slow down the attacker. He is currently recuperating in a local hospital, expecting to have his bandages removed soon. Stephen declined assistance from the football club owner for medical expenses, expressing that others may need it more. He looks forward to returning to supporting his team despite missing upcoming games due to his recovery.
The attacker, Anthony Williams, faces multiple charges related to the incident. Eleven individuals were hospitalized, with some in critical condition. The community has shown support for the victims and praised Stephen’s bravery in the face of danger.
