“Chlorine Cloud Incident Prompts Window Closures in Surrey”

Published:

Residents in Surrey were urged to quickly shut their windows as firefighters responded to a chlorine cloud incident that occurred in the area. The Surrey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a significant part of Surrey, particularly around Oxshott, was affected by the chemical event.

A spokesperson mentioned that the fire and rescue presence would likely continue throughout the day. Sussex Fire and Rescue later announced that the situation had been contained, allowing people to safely reopen their windows and doors.

The authorities confirmed that the issue had been resolved, stating, “Residents can now resume normal activities as the chemicals have been successfully contained.” Emergency services remained at the scene for hours following the incident, providing ongoing support and monitoring.

Chlorine, commonly used in swimming pools and cleaning products, is not naturally found in a gaseous form. However, accidental releases from industrial sites or transport vehicles can lead to its presence in the atmosphere, according to government sources.

Surrey Fire and Rescue received the initial call regarding the incident in Oxshott around midday. They reported the involvement of two swimming pool chemicals that interacted to produce the chlorine cloud. The affected area was clearly outlined on a map provided by the authorities.
