Today, Gordon Brown will denounce child poverty as a “disgraceful outbreak” in the United Kingdom.
During a significant address, the former Prime Minister of the Labour Party will highlight that child poverty is a significant factor causing societal rifts and the primary “danger” to the nation’s economy. Approximately 4.5 million children are currently residing in poverty, with experts cautioning that this number might escalate without prompt governmental intervention.
Mr. Brown will express, “What has evolved into a national child poverty crisis in the UK not only stands as the major source of social disparity in our nation but, due to the oversight in preparing young individuals for future employment, it also poses the most significant threat to our economic prospects in the long term.”
Previously, Mr. Brown advocated for the elimination of the two-child benefit limit— a policy accused of ensnaring children in poverty— to be abolished by officials. Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves are contemplating the abolition or reduction of the austerity policy from the Tory era as part of a review on child poverty.
Last week, the Resolution Foundation projected that child poverty levels could reach a record high of 34%, equivalent to about 4.8 million children, by the end of the decade unless immediate measures are implemented. The think tank stated that partial actions, such as transitioning to a three-child limit, would still result in higher child poverty rates by the decade’s end.
Mr. Brown is believed to support complete abolition, and his statements on child poverty today are expected to intensify the pressure on the Chancellor to act during the Budget announcement. In commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Child Poverty Action Group, Mr. Brown will assert that “lifting 500,000 children out of poverty is achievable.”
The former Labour Chancellor will reference recent studies indicating widespread public support for action. Surveys conducted by the 38 Degrees advocacy group reveal that 64% of voters endorse imposing higher taxes on gambling establishments to finance a reduction in child poverty.
The research also demonstrates broad backing across the nation, with at least half of the residents in 623 out of 632 constituencies endorsing the notion. This proposition, previously endorsed by Mr. Brown, suggests that up to £3.2 billion could be generated to permanently eliminate the two-child benefit limit.
Mr. Brown is anticipated to advocate for the establishment of a lasting UK-wide collaborative effort against poverty, involving charities, foundations, businesses, and faith groups, to collaborate with authorities across all four nations in addressing the escalating child poverty rates. He will emphasize, “This is urgently required to lift half a million children out of poverty starting from April next year and to genuinely confront the UK’s disgraceful child poverty epidemic.”
The government is set to reveal the outcomes of its child poverty assessment in the upcoming weeks, which has scrutinized the two-child benefit limit. They have also highlighted support measures, including extending free school meals and introducing new breakfast programs to aid primary school children.
