“Wagner Flag Near EU Border Sparks Concerns”

Published:

Russian forces under Vladimir Putin’s command have recently posed a unique threat to NATO by sailing a boat displaying the flag of the notorious Wagner private army near the EU border. The vessel, associated with Moscow’s secretive FSB security service, was spotted on the Narva River, close to the NATO country’s border, raising concerns in Estonia, which has been wary of potential Russian aggression. Despite the incident, Moscow has not issued any official statement regarding the matter.

Wagner, once a massive group of mercenaries, played a crucial role in Putin’s initial incursion into Ukraine before a falling out with its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was previously Putin’s chef. In 2023, Prigozhin led an unsuccessful coup against Putin due to disagreements over bringing the company’s personnel under Russian military control. He later died in a suspicious plane crash believed to be orchestrated by the Kremlin.

Today, Wagner operates on a smaller scale with an estimated 5,000 soldiers, conducting military operations in Africa and possibly maintaining a limited presence in Ukraine on behalf of the Kremlin. The use of the Wagner flag near the NATO-Estonia border has sparked speculation of the group’s potential disloyalty to Putin and intentions to challenge Moscow once more.

Estonia’s foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, remarked on the situation, suggesting that the Wagner group might be plotting against Moscow or even targeting St. Petersburg. He highlighted the cracks in Russia’s governance due to the ongoing conflict it initiated and external pressures from the West. Estonia remains vigilant over activities on the Narva River, emphasizing that they are closely monitoring the situation.

The border between Russia and Estonia spans 183 miles, with British troops currently deployed under Operation Cabrit to bolster NATO presence in Estonia alongside French and local forces at the Tapa military camp, located approximately 80 miles from the Russian border.
