“Met Office Predicts Break in ‘Anticyclonic Gloom’ This Saturday”

Published:

The Met Office has provided an update on the weather phenomenon termed “anticyclonic gloom” and revealed its anticipated conclusion date.

Meteorologists have indicated that some parts of the UK may experience breaks in the cloudy conditions on Saturday, offering a reprieve from the gloomy weather experienced throughout the week. This atmospheric condition, caused by a high-pressure system or anticyclone lingering over the region, has led to the overcast skies, as stated by the weather service.

The occurrence of anticyclonic gloom results from air descending towards the surface under high pressure, creating a layer of moisture or low cloud near the ground that limits the penetration of sunlight. While Friday is expected to remain overcast with light rain in certain areas, Saturday could see brighter conditions as the high pressure gradually moves towards the North Sea.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer from the Met Office mentioned, “We anticipate the most sunshine, notably in eastern regions. Although it is challenging to predict the exact locations of the sunniest periods, Saturday might offer a brighter outlook compared to recent days.”

She cautioned that many areas might still experience cloud cover on Saturday but with occasional breaks in the clouds, providing a slightly brighter atmosphere than seen recently. Sunday is likely to start damp, with widespread rainfall and increased wind speeds.

Glaisyer added, “Following the passage of the weather front later on Sunday, we expect a shift to a more changeable weather pattern for the early part of next week – a mix of sunny spells, heavy showers, and possibly prolonged periods of rain, maintaining a similar setup throughout the week.”

She further noted, “While we anticipate sunnier intervals and more sunshine between showers than this week, a continuous sunny day seems unlikely at present.” The Met Office’s forecast from Saturday to Monday indicates a transition from bright spells to wet and windy conditions in western regions.

Subsequently, the weather is anticipated to remain unsettled, with intermittent heavy showers and blustery conditions. The extended weather outlook from October 21 to October 30 foresees continued unsettled conditions, with low-pressure systems bringing rain or showers accompanied by strong winds at times. The period may witness a shift to a cooler, more showery regime towards the end, influenced by high pressure over the Atlantic and low pressure to the east of the UK.
