A tragic incident unfolded in Tullahoma, Tennessee, where a 50-year-old man, James Alexander Smith, and a three-month-old baby were apparently attacked and killed by the family’s pitbulls. Police discovered Smith’s body inside the property while the infant was still under attack by the seven dogs and also succumbed to the injuries.
Authorities had to intervene by shooting the dogs to access the victims, but unfortunately, they could not save the baby in time during the events of December 3. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the sequence of events and ascertain whether the victims were alive during the attack.
A neighbor, Rebecca Adams, recounted how the child’s mother cried out for her baby as law enforcement entered the premises around 3 pm last Wednesday. Adams mentioned that the dogs were typically kept in a yard but frequently escaped and exhibited aggressive behavior towards other animals in the area.
Attorney General Craig Northcott described the scene as exceptionally distressing and violent, urging prayers for the victims’ family and the first responders who witnessed the harrowing incident.
The official statement reported that the police responded to a call about the pitbulls mauling James Alexander Smith and his granddaughter at their residence on East Warren Street. The responding officers had to put down the dogs to stop the attack, confirming the deaths of both victims.
An ongoing investigation aims to determine the cause of death, whether the mauling occurred postmortem, the dogs’ prior behavior, any child-related issues that may have required intervention, and any other factors contributing to the incident. No decisions have been made yet regarding potential criminal charges, and the dogs involved have been euthanized while others from the residence are under the care of Tullahoma Animal Control pending further action.
