Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed his approval for a significant development concerning Donald Trump as Democrat Zohran Mamdani emerges victorious in the mayoral race in New York City.
Despite President Trump’s support for Andrew Cuomo, who was defeated, and his negative remarks labeling Mamdani a “communist,” Mamdani secured the win over Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become the city’s inaugural Muslim mayor of South Asian descent.
Sir Sadiq praised Mamdani’s achievement, acknowledging the historic nature of his campaign. In a statement, Sir Sadiq highlighted the choice New Yorkers faced between hope and fear, drawing parallels to the victory of hope in London.
The London mayor’s endorsement of Mamdani follows a prolonged feud with Trump, who has criticized Sir Sadiq since 2015 over his stance on Muslim travel restrictions and during Trump’s UK visit, where Trump disparaged Sir Sadiq as one of the worst mayors globally.
In response, Sir Sadiq has labeled Trump as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic, questioning why he seems fixated on a Muslim mayor leading a progressive city. Mamdani, in his victory speech, challenged Trump to acknowledge the support he received and emphasized New York’s identity as an immigrant-led city.
The city’s Board of Elections reported a record voter turnout in over 50 years, with more than two million ballots cast. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, when asked about Mamdani’s win, indicated a limited focus on American politics.
