“Teenager Dies in Fireworks Tragedy: Homemade Explosives Suspected”

Published:

A tragic incident involving fireworks led to the death of a 17-year-old teenager in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of southern Los Angeles. The teenager was in his backyard “playing with fireworks” when a loud explosion was heard by neighbors on Wednesday night around 9:30 pm. The use of fireworks is prohibited in the city of Los Angeles, and it is suspected that the fireworks involved may have been homemade.

Emergency services were notified, and officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived at the scene on W. 84th Street. Upon arrival, they found the teenager on fire. He was quickly transported to the hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

According to local authorities, the fireworks used may have been homemade, with the teenager’s family unaware of his possession or activities with fireworks. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion resembling a bomb, prompting the LAPD Bomb Squad to conduct an investigation.

Police revealed that the teenager was handling pyrotechnic materials that detonated, leading to the discovery of a significant amount of illegal pyrotechnic devices. These explosives were safely removed, ensuring no further public safety concerns.

The City of Los Angeles strictly prohibits all forms of fireworks, including possession, sale, and usage. Community activist Najee Ali expressed concerns over the availability of illegal fireworks and the tragic loss of the teenager.

Although firework-related deaths in the U.S. are relatively low, with recent numbers showing a range between 8 to 15 deaths annually, injuries remain a prevalent issue. Misuse or malfunctions are often linked to these fatalities, highlighting the risks associated with fireworks according to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
