Another Conservative figure, Nadhim Zahawi, has switched allegiance to Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Zahawi, a former Cabinet Minister known for his role in the Covid vaccine rollout, was dismissed from his position for breaching the ministerial code related to undisclosed tax affairs. He later paid a substantial sum to HMRC as a penalty.
Zahawi’s controversial past includes claiming expenses for electricity bills for his stables and attending events with allegations of misconduct. Despite his wealth and business connections, which appeal to Reform UK’s donor base, Zahawi’s move raises questions about the party’s anti-establishment image.
The defection of Zahawi, a close ally of Boris Johnson, to Reform UK drew criticism from the Conservative Party, with reports suggesting he sought a peerage before switching sides. Zahawi joins other former Johnson loyalists in the party, indicating a lack of confidence in the Prime Minister’s political future.
In a press conference, Zahawi expressed his belief that the country is in a state of decline, attributing blame to the current Tory leadership. Whether the public will embrace Reform UK as the solution remains uncertain, given the party’s recruitment of disillusioned Tories like Zahawi.
