A mother of three tragically lost her life after taking in a stray dog that later attacked her own pet. Barbara Brewington, 38, was discovered by authorities in the backyard of her residence in Bonnetsville, North Carolina on November 23, succumbing to injuries sustained during the incident. She had been caring for a mixed-breed stray dog she had welcomed into her home six months prior, which suddenly turned aggressive towards her smaller dog before also attacking her as she intervened.
Despite the fatal outcome for Barbara, her pet survived the assault, and the stray dog was euthanized by a specialized animal control team following the incident. Sheriff Jimmy Thornton of Sampson County recounted finding Ms. Brewington outside her home with severe injuries, with her passing away as emergency responders tried to save her.
Describing the tragic event, Sheriff Thornton revealed to People, “She had her own pet dog. And for some reason or another, the little dog got out. And she was trying to separate the stray dog from her pet. And apparently the dog got overly aggressive and attacked her.”
Barbara, a married woman with three children, was employed as a dental assistant at Village Family Dental, as stated in her obituary. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated by her sister, Samantha, to aid Barbara’s children, praising her as a beacon of love and joy, emphasizing her devotion to her family.
The fundraising effort has garnered over $24,700 towards its $26,000 target, with colleagues and acquaintances expressing their sorrow and admiration for Barbara’s character and dedication. Tributes and condolences have flooded social media platforms, with many expressing sympathy and support for Barbara’s grieving husband, Bradley, and reminiscing about her warmth and kindness.
