An urgent warning has been issued to all Android and iPhone users regarding the use of unofficial charging accessories. With many new devices now being sold without chargers, consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives available online. However, consumer watchdog Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these unofficial chargers.
Which? conducted tests on various chargers purchased from online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and others, revealing alarming results. Some chargers were found to have poor manufacturing standards, posing risks of electric shock, fire, or explosions. One counterfeit charger even imitated an Apple product but failed safety tests.
The investigation also uncovered chargers lacking required safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry that could lead to overheating and safety hazards. This is not the first time Which? has highlighted the dangers of unsafe electrical products sold online.
Sue Davies from Which? emphasized the serious consequences of poorly designed electrical products and called for stronger product safety laws for online marketplaces. In response, Amazon and B&Q reiterated their commitment to customer safety and the removal of identified hazardous chargers from their platforms.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these products may be pricier, experts stress that the potential dangers outweigh any cost savings.
