A 34-year-old man, who had recently lost his job as a customer service representative, tragically lost his life while working a temporary position at a supermarket during the holiday season. Jdimytai Damour had taken the job at Walmart in Green Acres Mall, New York, hoping to earn money to cover his expenses and save for his education. However, on Black Friday in 2008, he was fatally trampled by a crowd of over 2,000 shoppers who stormed the store at 5 am, seeking discounted items.
Damour, a graduate of Freeport High School, aspired to become a teacher due to his love for reading and poetry. His father described him as a “good boy.” The chaos of the event led to other employees being injured and shoppers struggling for air amidst the overwhelming crowd. Damour was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 6:03 am due to asphyxiation caused by the pressure on his chest from being stepped on.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Walmart lacked sufficient security measures to handle the massive influx of shoppers on Black Friday. The major supermarket released a statement expressing regret over the tragic incident despite their efforts to enhance security and cooperate with law enforcement.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 demanded an inquiry into Damour’s death, labeling it as preventable. The union president criticized the lack of safety barriers, security, and store management oversight, deeming it a case of extreme negligence.
