Britons’ Trust in US Plummets Under Trump’s Leadership

Published:

A recent study reveals that British trust in the United States has significantly declined over the past year since the inauguration of Donald Trump. Currently, 56% of individuals express distrust in the US, a stark increase from the 40% recorded shortly after Trump’s re-election in November 2024.

Only one-fifth of Britons now indicate trust in the US under Trump’s leadership, a notable decrease from one-third in the previous year. This shift in sentiment comes amid Trump’s wavering stance as an ally against Russia and the unfavorable outcomes stemming from a purported “trade deal” with the UK. The findings of the report are set to be released on the first anniversary of Trump’s return to the Oval Office.

A YouGov poll, conducted by the advocacy group Best for Britain, highlights that after just nine months back in power, the European Union is perceived as the UK’s most dependable partner. Former British Ambassador to the US, Sir Kim Darroch, criticized Trump’s inconsistent response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine, emphasizing the urgency for the UK government to prioritize strengthening ties with the EU, especially in the realm of Security and Defense Partnerships.

In light of these developments, Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, underscores the growing awareness among the British public regarding the risks posed by Trump’s leadership style on the global stage. Smith emphasizes the need for pragmatic collaboration with the EU to enhance the economy, reduce costs, and ensure collective security. The Labour Party is urged to expedite efforts in engaging with Brussels to avoid potential repercussions from an electorate grappling with financial pressures.
