“Tragic Murders of Young Girls Rock Australian Community”

Published:

Two young girls were tragically raped and killed on a beach after going door-to-door in the days leading up to Halloween.

Patricia Leedie, 9, and Leanne Oliver, 10, were seeking to earn some extra money while Oliver’s parents attended a Sunday afternoon barbecue in a neighbor’s backyard. The girls, who were accustomed to doing odd jobs for cash, went knocking on doors but never returned home on October 29, 1995.

Last seen around 3pm that day, the girls were reported missing by 7pm, prompting a massive search effort that extended into the night and resumed the next morning. The girls were discovered by Leanne’s father, Alby Oliver, approximately 12 hours after they vanished, lying side-by-side in the sand dunes at Warana Beach.

Subsequent post-mortem examinations confirmed that both girls had been sexually assaulted. Paul Stephen Osborne, a 27-year-old laborer with a history of sexual assault, was linked to the crime scene when his wallet was found near the girls’ bodies. Osborne, who had been at the same barbecue as Leanne’s parents before heading towards the beach, was promptly arrested and charged with the murders.

Following Osborne’s admission of guilt, he was sentenced to two life terms for the murders and two 18-year sentences for the rapes. The community of Warana, located in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland, Australia, continues to grapple with the heinous crime decades later. Osborne’s recent denial of parole ensures he will remain incarcerated for at least another eight years.

Queensland Parole Board president Michael Byrne cited the severity of Osborne’s crimes when rejecting his parole application in 2020, postponing any future consideration until May 22, 2032. The board emphasized the public safety risk posed by Osborne’s potential release.

Supreme Court Justice Glen Williams, when delivering Osborne’s sentencing, underscored that Osborne should never be released due to the gravity of his offenses. The tragic incident sparked widespread public outrage and heightened security measures at Maroochydore Magistrates Court during the trial proceedings.
