A woman shared her struggle with a debilitating condition that prevents her from singing or laughing due to the constant risk of her ribs dislocating. Melanie Hartshorn, diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), faces the challenge of her skull dislocating from her neck and spine. After pioneering surgeries to fuse her neck and spine, she achieved the milestone of walking for the first time.
Recently, Melanie discovered that four of her ribs had dislocated following a surgery, requiring her to raise £85,000 for an operation not covered by the NHS. Surgeons emphasize the necessity of fusing the dislocated ribs to prevent further complications that could impact her breathing.
Melanie, residing in Northumberland, is currently immobilized as she endeavors to gather funds for the necessary surgery in Spain. She expressed her distress, highlighting the limitations imposed by the dislocations on simple actions like laughing, singing, and even coughing.
In a previous life-saving operation in Barcelona, Melanie became the first patient globally to have her neck and spine fused, enabling her to walk. However, her subsequent rib dislocations during a spinal fusion operation unveiled a new challenge. The urgency to raise funds for the rib fusion operation is paramount to prevent worsening instability and potential complications affecting her respiratory function.
Through a GoFundMe appeal, Melanie has raised £20,000, expressing gratitude for the support received. Despite setbacks, she remains determined to regain her independence and live a normal life by overcoming the hurdles posed by her condition.
