An elderly woman tragically passed away on a deserted island after being left behind by a cruise ship during a 60-day journey around Australia. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and how she ended up stranded on the remote Far North Queensland island.
The woman, who was part of an expensive cruise, was not reported missing until a day after the ship departed from Cairns and anchored near Lizard Island. It is believed that she got lost while hiking on the island’s summit with a group and was left behind when the group returned to the ship without her.
Reports suggest that she may have fallen off a cliff, leading to her disappearance. Concerns have been raised about safety protocols after it was revealed that the cruise ship did not conduct proper headcounts of passengers on the island before departing.
A search and rescue operation was initiated, and the woman’s remains were eventually recovered from the island. Coral Expeditions, the cruise operator, confirmed the tragic incident and stated that they had been in contact with the woman’s family and local authorities throughout the ordeal.
