Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with the frustrating issue of online congestion that typically occurs during peak evening hours. This surge in internet activity when households engage in streaming, downloading, and video calls can lead to a noticeable slowdown in connection speeds.
Analogous to a motorway, broadband experiences reduced performance when multiple users are active simultaneously. This phenomenon explains why speeds significantly drop between 7 pm and 11 pm as network traffic peaks.
A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK regions most impacted by these peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) identified as the most affected area. The report indicates that average download speeds in Wigan plummet from 167Mbps during off-peak times to a mere 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decline.
Other areas experiencing substantial slowdowns during peak hours include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
Conversely, some regions in the UK witness an improvement in broadband performance during peak hours. Newport emerged as the top-performing area in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie highlighted the similarity between internet congestion and road traffic, emphasizing that broadband speeds can be affected by peak-time usage patterns. The analysis of 144,509 broadband speed tests identified locations where performance fluctuates the most during peak hours, with Wigan residents experiencing the largest speed drop of 55%.
The study also underscored regional variations in broadband performance, with Scotland ranking highest overall for improved evening speeds. In contrast, the South West experienced an average speed decrease of about 15% during peak periods.
Experts in the broadband industry suggest several measures for households to enhance their home connection. Positioning the router centrally and away from obstructions can improve signal quality, while providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to resolve temporary network issues.
