“Smaller Mobile Networks Outshine Big Four, Says Which?”

Published:

A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that despite the popularity of the major mobile networks EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, they are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The survey, which gathered feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

According to Which?, the survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which are not. The results indicated that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller rivals.

In the rankings, Talkmobile secured the top position, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.

One of the key findings of the report was the significant price difference between the Big Four and smaller networks. Customers on the major networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas those on smaller networks paid only £9 on average.

Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring customers can access similar signal strength and service quality without the premium price tag of well-known brands. Switching between networks is also more straightforward than perceived, with some customers able to make the transition in as little as 10 minutes.

A member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 for SMARTY, saving around £200 a year by switching to a more affordable plan. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger mobile firms in terms of customer service and cost-effectiveness.

Hitchins advised customers nearing the end of their contracts or seeking to save money to consider switching to providers offering better value and service. The full rankings from Which? are as follows:
