“AI-Created Fake Videos of Sharks in Jamaica’s Flooded Streets Spark Misinformation Concerns”

Published:

Fake videos created using AI technology falsely depict sharks swimming in the flooded streets of Jamaica amidst the impact of Hurricane Melissa. The Category 5 storm is currently devastating Jamaica and is anticipated to result in severe destruction, marking the most powerful storm to hit the island in its recorded history of 174 years. The Jamaican government has made extensive preparations, leading to deserted streets in the capital city of Kingston.

Concerns have been raised on the island due to the circulation of fabricated images portraying sharks in floodwaters. Numerous AI-generated videos have emerged, some bearing OpenAI’s Sora watermark, while others lack clear indicators of their inauthenticity.

Senator Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s information minister, has been actively addressing the dissemination of misinformation through press conferences, urging the public to rely on official sources for accurate updates. In addition to the shark images, there have been other misleading videos depicting severe flooding and individuals fleeing from large waves.

A meteorology professor from the University of Oklahoma, Prof Amy McGovern, has cautioned about the risks associated with fake content during natural disasters. The professor emphasized that spreading fake images could undermine the seriousness of official alerts and potentially lead to loss of life and property.

Hurricane Melissa, a historically strong storm, made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope and is projected to exit the region around St. Ann parish before heading towards Cuba. Reports of landslides, fallen trees, and widespread power outages emerged prior to the storm’s arrival, with authorities highlighting the challenges in post-storm cleanup and damage evaluation due to the lack of infrastructure capable of withstanding a Category 5 hurricane in the region.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed concerns about the speed of recovery following the storm, acknowledging the significant obstacles ahead in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa’s impact.
