A manhunt is currently in progress for a dangerous sex offender who tried to sexually assault a young girl. Muhammad Zahid, aged 59 and hailing from Burnley, Lancashire, made an attempt to attack an 11-year-old girl in 2021. However, the brave victim thwarted his efforts by bravely kicking him off. Zahid received a 10-and-a-half-year sentence at Burnley Crown Court on October 7, comprising nine years and six months in custody and an additional year on extended licence due to his classification as a dangerous offender.
During the trial, Zahid fled halfway through, prompting a Bench Warrant for his arrest. DC Hannah Brown of Lancashire Police labeled Zahid as a perilous individual who seized an opportunity to assault a child but failed due to the victim’s courage. Brown commended the victim for her bravery in reporting the incident and testifying in court. Despite Zahid’s denial, his actions were clear, leading to his flight from justice. Lancashire Police remains committed to locating Zahid, urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
In a statement to the court, the victim’s mother described the impact of the assault on her daughter, noting her initial withdrawal and fearfulness. Following the disclosure and legal proceedings, the victim experienced distress but has since found closure and happiness after receiving justice.
Zahid, who denied the charge of attempted rape but was convicted by a jury at Burnley Crown Court, was also subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and mandated to register as a sex offender for life.
If Zahid is sighted, individuals are urged to contact emergency services at 999. Information about his location can be shared via email at 536@lancashire.police.uk or by calling 101, referencing log 349 dated November 28, 2022.
