“Drones Disrupt Alicante Airport, Flights Diverted”

Published:

Passengers are experiencing disruptions at an airport popular among British tourists due to the presence of drones in the vicinity, leading to flight diversions and restrictions in operations. The Alicante-Elche Airport in eastern Spain is currently under investigation by the police after reports of drone sightings, resulting in the diversion of at least nine planes. Flights from various destinations, including London, Manchester, Newcastle, Durham, and Frankfurt, have been redirected to nearby airports such as Valencia, Murcia, and Palma de Majorca until 11pm local time.

Authorities have dispatched a specialized aerial unit to locate the drones believed to be in the Torrellano area. While the airport spokesperson mentioned the lack of visible activity in the area, the need for safety precautions remains a priority. Operations are set to resume after a temporary closure, with the first departing flight scheduled shortly before 11pm, although passengers are advised of potential delays.

Recent incidents of drone disruptions at Majorca Airport earlier this month have raised concerns, prompting emergency measures and flight diversions. Air crew reported drone sightings, leading to flight suspensions and diversionary landings. Incidences of drone interference at various European airports, with alleged involvement from Russia, have added to the ongoing challenges faced by aviation authorities.

Onboard experiences have been affected, with passengers on a Ryanair flight from Madrid to Palma diverted to Ibiza due to drone sightings during landing. Passengers recounted delays for refueling and uncertainty regarding departure times. These disruptions highlight the increasing impact of drone activities on air travel operations and passenger experiences.
