In the late hours, Donald Trump revealed an extensive plan to increase deportations of legal immigrants in response to the recent Washington DC incident. The assault, resulting in the death of a National Guard member and critical injury of another, was allegedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the US post the Kabul fall in 2021. Trump’s announcement on Truth Social indicated that his actions would not be limited to those involved in the shooting but would encompass any migrant group deemed to be undermining American values.
Trump emphasized the need for “REVERSE MIGRATION” to address the situation, hinting at a temporary halt on migration from specified regions to facilitate the removal of individuals deemed not beneficial to the US or lacking love for the country. He also declared the termination of federal benefits for non-citizens and the potential revocation of citizenship for those disrupting domestic peace.
Furthermore, the President expanded his deportation initiative to encompass any foreign national considered a burden on public resources, a security threat, or incompatible with Western values. Even individuals with permanent residency status, known as “green card” holders, were not exempt from the purge.
During subsequent discussions, Trump shifted blame from the Afghan community to the Somali population in Minnesota. He made disparaging remarks about the Somali community and targeted Ilhan Omar, a Congresswoman with Somali origins, with racist comments. Despite accusations, Omar legally sought asylum with her family in 1995 and became a US citizen in 2000.
Trump’s rhetoric included baseless claims and attacks on the integrity of the vetting process for Afghan refugees. He criticized the media for questioning the vetting procedures and asserted his administration’s difficulty in deporting asylum seekers. Despite the false claims, he adamantly defended his stance, deflecting responsibility for granting asylum to the alleged shooter seven months prior.
Lastly, Trump perpetuated misinformation regarding illegal immigration figures during Biden’s presidency, citing exaggerated numbers. He inaccurately stated the foreign-born population in the US and continued to propagate falsehoods to support his anti-immigration narrative.
