Refuse collectors in a major UK city are expressing outrage over the unsightly and unsanitary conditions left outside residences. A video shared by a waste collector in Glasgow depicted a back court strewn with decaying garbage and torn bags, highlighting the daily challenges faced by refuse workers in the area. Chris Mitchell, a union representative from the GMB Union, condemned the scene as “an absolute disgrace,” emphasizing the health risks posed by working in such filthy environments infested with vermin like rats.
The footage showcased trash scattered across the back court, with waste piled up on the ground and bags ripped open. According to GlasgowLive, the maintenance of back courts falls under the responsibility of property owners, residents, and their managing agents.
In the video, Mitchell voiced his concern, stating, “The working conditions for cleansing staff in Scotland in the 21st century are deplorable and disgusting given the compensation they receive.” He pointed out the hazardous conditions they face daily, including rat infestations and overall unhygienic surroundings.
Mitchell also highlighted the challenges faced by refuse workers, describing the job as one of the toughest in Scotland due to the repulsive and odorous nature of the work. Despite the difficult circumstances, he commended the dedication of the workers striving to clean up the city under immense pressure and staff shortages.
Responding to the situation, a spokesperson for Glasgow City Council clarified that refuse collectors are paid competitively within the local authority sector in Scotland. The council stressed that the back court mess featured in the video is the responsibility of property owners, residents, and their managing agents, who are obligated to maintain cleanliness and proper waste disposal practices on their premises.
The video also revealed multiple waste bins with closed lids, indicating recent emptying. The council emphasized the importance of residents utilizing the available bin capacity properly to contain their waste, emphasizing that it is the duty of residents, property owners, and managing agents to address any mess on their property promptly.
