MPs have raised concerns about the heavy tax burden on Britain’s pubs, emphasizing the need for significant measures to alleviate the strain on the industry. The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group (APPBG) highlighted that recent regulations are stifling the growth potential of the pub and brewing sector. They labeled the industry as a significant economic contributor, supporting over one million jobs and adding £34.3 billion to the economy. The group stressed that pubs play a crucial role in revitalizing high streets, fostering community cohesion, and driving growth.
The Mirror is actively advocating for the rescue of struggling pubs in Britain. The MPs outlined a set of requests, suggesting that the sector could expand by 6% annually with the implementation of appropriate policies, which could generate half a million new jobs by 2030. Among their proposals, the APPBG urged for the reduction or elimination of employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs), particularly for young employees under 25.
Additionally, the MPs called for substantial reforms in Business Rates, a minimum 5% reduction in beer duty, and the alignment of the definition of alcohol-free beers with European standards at 0.5%. They also emphasized the need for investments in employment, skills, brewing innovation, and apprenticeships. Furthermore, they recommended extending capital allowances to cover pub furniture, kitchen equipment, and equipment for achieving Net Zero goals, such as solar panels.
Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, the chair of APPBG, emphasized that the sector has been neglected and burdened by excessive taxes, hindering its growth potential and investments. She highlighted that their recommendations aim to create a conducive fiscal and regulatory environment for the brewing and pub industry to stimulate rapid economic growth, benefiting local communities, policymakers, and the government.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended the Mirror’s campaign to support struggling pubs and unveiled plans to enable pubs to operate for longer hours. The government has pledged to reduce bureaucratic barriers holding back pubs by revising strict rules that hinder outdoor food service, live music events, and operation due to noise complaints. A review will gather feedback from communities, landlords, and customers on licensing rules following a task force’s recommendations for rule modifications.
The Mirror’s “Your Pub Needs You” initiative is dedicated to bolstering the industry by advocating for a government fund to support pubs, acknowledgment of bars excelling in community service, and assistance for groups interested in purchasing local pubs. A Government spokesperson emphasized the vital role of thriving pubs in communities and economic growth, highlighting ongoing support initiatives tailored for pub owners and plans to streamline licensing processes and improve the business rates system.
