“UK Households Embrace Internet TV, Threatening Traditional Broadcast”

Published:

Millions of households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content viewing. A recent study, commissioned by Sky, indicates that the majority of households could have access to internet-based TV by the mid-2030s, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial distribution methods like Freeview.

Various alternatives to aerial-based TV viewing, such as Sky’s latest streaming services and the newly introduced Freely platform (from the creators of Freeview), are gaining popularity. Freely, integrated into many new televisions, offers broadband-enabled access to both live and on-demand programming.

The trend towards streaming is increasing as more internet-connected devices enter households, reducing reliance on conventional broadcast TV.

However, a concern looms over Freeview’s future due to the potential sharing of radio frequencies with mobile operators post-2031, challenging the current over-the-air transmission setup.

The expenses associated with maintaining the outdated TV infrastructure are rising, prompting discussions within the UK government about future strategies.

Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the potential synergy between modern TV consumption and social inclusion. He emphasized the feasibility of transitioning entirely to internet-based TV by the 2030s, viewing it as a means to bridge the digital gap and enhance overall connectivity.

Amidst the shift towards streaming, a petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview has garnered significant support, citing concerns about access issues for some viewers. The petition warns of a potential future where fixed broadband contracts would be necessary for TV viewing, affecting households that rely on terrestrial signals.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed her reliance on Freeview for entertainment and information, expressing apprehension about the complexities associated with transitioning to streaming services.

Updates on the future of television services are anticipated in the near future.
