Man Survives Bear Attack, Loses Sight

Published:

A man who was attacked by a bear has shared his terrifying experience leading up to the moment the animal crushed his skull, causing him to lose consciousness.

Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a large brown bear pulled him into bushes and repeatedly bit his head, resulting in his skull being cracked and him passing out. Fortunately, the bear’s teeth did not penetrate his brain.

Although he survived the attack, Dan lost his sight as a consequence. Nearly two decades later, he vividly recounted the moment his life changed forever, remembering the eerie noise he heard just before he believed his end was near.

Having spent many years in Alaska, Dan shared his account on the Black Rifle Coffee Company’s YouTube channel, detailing the encounter with the bear while walking through the forest after a day of fishing with his friend Jana.

Coastal Alaska is known for hosting the largest brown bears globally, towering over 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. These bears are exceptionally swift and agile, capable of outrunning the average person at speeds of 35 to 40 mph in short bursts.

While Dan had encountered bears in the wild previously, he quickly recognized the distinct aggression of this particular bear. Despite attempting to retreat cautiously, the bear unexpectedly attacked, swiping at Dan.

Unbeknownst to them, the bear’s cubs were concealed in nearby bushes, prompting the mother bear to defend them. Dan’s futile jump into the bushes led to him being seized and mauled by the bear.

Recalling the ordeal, Dan described hearing a distressing wail resembling that of a dying creature, only to realize it was his own voice.

Dragged into the bushes, Dan endured the bear’s assault as she sunk her teeth into his head, fracturing his skull and causing him to lose consciousness intermittently, waking up four times during the attack.

After perceiving him as deceased, the bear eventually departed. Jana, with the assistance of local fishermen, tended to Dan for two hours until emergency services arrived to transport him to the hospital.

Several of Dan’s major arteries were severed in the incident, initially deemed “incompatible with life” by doctors. Following a 12-hour surgery while in a medically induced coma, Dan began his recovery journey upon waking up twelve days post-attack.

As a recreational therapist for children, Dan was deeply affected by the traumatic event.

Reflecting on the incident in another interview, he expressed how the experience continued to haunt him, imprinting itself in his memory, manifesting in recurrent nightmares and intrusive thoughts for years.
