The stewards of Formula 1 have disclosed the reasons behind penalizing Lewis Hamilton during the Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton came under scrutiny for going off track while battling Max Verstappen, which led to a demand for punishment from the Dutch driver.
After an investigation, Hamilton was initially cleared for not using the designated escape road as per the race director’s instructions. The stewards explained that Hamilton locked brakes, went off track into the run-off area, and was carrying too much speed to follow the prescribed escape route, justifying his failure to comply with the instructions.
Despite this, Hamilton was penalized with a 10-second time penalty for gaining an unfair advantage by leaving the track. The penalty caused him to drop to eighth place after serving it during his pit stop, with several cars overtaking him before he rejoined the race.
Hamilton expressed frustration over the penalty during a radio conversation with his race engineer. He later commented on his race result, stating that while it was enjoyable initially, it did not end as he had hoped, acknowledging the nature of motor racing.
When asked about the incident that led to his penalty, Hamilton described the off-line conditions as challenging and emphasized his efforts to keep the car on track and return safely. He also noted the importance of earning some points despite the setback.
