Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google had previously suggested this update was in the works, and now it seems to be rolling out globally. In a recent post on the Gmail blog page, Google confirmed that users can switch their Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same ending.
This change could be beneficial for users who want a fresh username or have new circumstances. However, Google mentioned an ‘important’ note that this feature is gradually becoming available to all users and may not be accessible to everyone yet.
The new system will allow both the old and new email addresses to function simultaneously. Any emails sent to the current Gmail address will automatically be forwarded to the new one. Google assures users that their account data, including photos, messages, and emails linked to the original address, will remain unaffected.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing your emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if prompted.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Click on Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is not available, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username you wish to use, ensuring it has not been used before.
– Click on Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Once done, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will be kept as an alternate email.
