One fatality and a minimum of four individuals have sustained severe injuries following a tornado that hit an area situated just 10 miles north of Paris. During the weather anomaly in the Val d’Oise region of France, three cranes collapsed, as captured in dramatic footage displaying their successive descent. The intense winds also ripped off roofs, with authorities labeling the tornado as “sudden” and “unusually intense.”
An extensive emergency response effort was initiated, deploying 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 ambulance service members to address the aftermath in residential neighborhoods within the town of Ermont. The deceased victim, a 23-year-old worker at a construction site struck by the tornado, was identified by the Val-d’Oise prefect.
Public prosecutor Guirec Le Bras of Pontoise, who visited the site, reported, “There are ten victims, including one fatality, a 23-year-old man who was an employee of the construction company operating at the site.”
As cleanup operations continue, roads and railway lines leading out of the northern Paris area remain closed. The tornado struck at approximately 5:45 pm local time. The Keraunos observatory, a French organization monitoring tornadoes and severe weather events, suggested that the abrupt gales may have originated from a “supercell-type storm,” known for its rotating updrafts of circulating air capable of sustaining severe weather conditions, such as large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez shared on Twitter, “A sudden and unusually intense tornado episode affected several towns in Vald’Oise, resulting in one fatality and multiple severe injuries. I am closely monitoring the situation and extend my support to the local officials, emergency services, and affected residents. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim.”
