“Ronan’s Law: UK Cracks Down on Ninja Sword Sales”

Published:

On a summer evening on June 29, 2022, my son Ronan was walking home when two sixteen-year-old boys attacked him from behind, stabbing him twice with a 22‑inch ninja sword. The weapon used in the attack was purchased online with a fake ID, raising concerns about the sale of such harmful items without proper oversight.

The incident prompted me to seek justice and change in the system. Meeting with Sir Keir Starmer, then Leader of the Opposition, I found a receptive ear to my concerns as a grieving mother. Together, we addressed the issue of unregulated weapon sales and loopholes that allowed retailers to evade responsibility.

Under the current leadership, the ban on ninja swords was implemented through Ronan’s Law, which not only prohibits these weapons but also holds tech companies and retailers more accountable. Stricter penalties and ID verification measures have been put in place to prevent underage sales and remove knife-related content online.

The government’s proactive approach, including the successful amnesty scheme to surrender weapons, has significantly reduced knife-enabled crimes. Collaboration with various stakeholders, such as FazAmnesty, led to the surrender of over 7,000 weapons, including ninja swords, across high-risk areas.

In memory of Ronan, a dedicated amnesty bin was set up in Wolverhampton, symbolizing the lasting impact of his legacy. The government’s efforts, including the Young Futures program focusing on prevention and support for at-risk youth, have shown promising results in reducing violence at its roots.

As a mother advocating for change, I commend the government’s commitment to combat knife crime and protect our young generations. The implementation of Ronan’s Law and ongoing partnerships with communities highlight the collective effort to create a safer society.

The impact of these initiatives is undeniable, but continuous collaboration and vigilance are crucial to sustain progress. I express gratitude for the government’s dedication to enacting meaningful reforms in my son’s honor and urge for sustained efforts to further reduce knife crime nationwide.
