Google has unveiled a significant enhancement for Gmail users, aiming to streamline email processes and enhance inbox management. The update will roll out first in the US before reaching other regions. Upon arrival in the UK, users can expect three key improvements.
The first feature, AI Overviews, allows users to search their inbox using natural language queries. For instance, users can ask questions like “Who provided a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” Gmail will then locate relevant emails and summarize key details. Additionally, AI Overviews can condense lengthy email threads into concise summaries, reducing the time spent navigating through extensive conversations.
Another enhancement focuses on writing assistance, offering improved smart replies and composition tools to facilitate email drafting and refinement. These tools can also aid in proofreading for users. For example, when organizing a family event, suggested replies can generate responses matching the user’s tone and style, simplifying the communication process.
Users can access a new Proofread tool, available for an extra fee, which provides advanced grammar, tone, and style suggestions to ensure polished emails. While features like Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are free for all users, the Proofread tool is exclusive to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
The update also introduces AI-powered inbox filters to help manage email overload. These filters prioritize important messages and offer insights into tasks and deadlines. Additionally, a feature called “Catch me up” provides a snapshot of significant life updates found in Gmail, such as reservations, deliveries, purchases, and event changes.
Google emphasized the role of AI in enhancing Gmail functionality, stating that with inboxes becoming busier, managing information is as crucial as managing messages. The company aims to evolve Gmail into a proactive inbox assistant for users in the modern digital era.
