An incident at a primary school in Vermont involved a substitute teacher, Melissa Martin, who allegedly brought cocaine into the classroom and exhibited strange behavior while under the influence of drugs. The teacher, 47, was charged with cocaine possession and reckless endangerment after being found with the illegal substance at Barre Town Middle and Elementary School on October 1.
When police responded to reports of an adult showing signs of drug influence, Martin admitted to having cocaine in her jacket pocket. A subsequent search by a K-9 unit discovered more cocaine in her jacket and backpack, totaling less than 2.5g. Barre Town Police Chief William Dodge emphasized that Martin’s actions posed a risk to the students under her care, leading to charges of possession of cocaine and reckless endangerment.
A concerned parent, identified as Brittany, reported that her son, a student in Martin’s class, observed the substitute teacher displaying erratic behavior. According to Brittany, her son witnessed Martin nearly falling asleep during the lesson and mistaking him for her pet dog, addressing him as “Teddy” and questioning why he was off his leash.
Joan Canning, the superintendent of the Barre Unified Union School District, commended the student for reporting the unusual behavior and highlighted the importance of speaking up if any concerns arise. Canning confirmed that Martin, who had served as a permanent substitute teacher for approximately three years, was terminated following the incident.
Martin pleaded not guilty to the charges of cocaine possession and reckless endangerment and was released under court conditions prohibiting her from entering school premises. Canning assured parents that the school environment is now safe without Martin’s presence and urged them not to be anxious about the situation.
