A 32-year-old daycare worker has been taken into custody and charged for allegedly causing harm to a three-month-old baby by breaking her arm, as per authorities. Identified as Ashley Karschnick, the worker reportedly became agitated when the infant cried each time she handled her, leading her to forcefully hit the baby against a crib, resulting in the arm fracture.
Karschnick is facing a felony child abuse charge for recklessly causing harm in connection with the incident at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac. Law enforcement responded to a children’s hospital after the baby girl was admitted with a fractured arm, according to a criminal complaint obtained by WBAY, a local news outlet.
Medical records from Children’s Wisconsin indicated that the baby suffered a minimal displaced spiral fracture, consistent with physical abuse. After conducting an investigation involving interviews and surveillance footage review, authorities found Karschnick working in the baby room at the daycare when the alleged abuse occurred. Surveillance footage revealed her increasing frustration throughout the day.
The incident where the baby’s arm broke allegedly happened around 12:30 p.m., according to Express.com. The video footage reportedly shows Karschnick lifting the baby and forcefully placing her into the crib, causing a noticeable impact on the mattress and crib movement. Subsequently, she attempted to swaddle the baby, but the child continued to cry intensely.
Despite the baby showing signs of arm discomfort, Karschnick denied the allegations, attributing the crib movement to accidental contact. When questioned about the baby’s cries, she claimed the baby always cried when she touched her. Karschnick is currently in jail after posting a $2,500 bond and requested permission at a court hearing to visit public places with children present, which was not granted.
