“UK’s Key Role in Gaza Peace Summit Praised by US Official”

A high-ranking US official has commended the United Kingdom and an essential aide to Keir Starmer for their significant contributions to the ongoing Gaza peace summit. Steve Witkoff, the Middle East special envoy appointed by Donald Trump, highlighted the exceptional support provided by Jonathan Powell, the Prime Minister’s adviser.

Contrary to the criticism from the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, regarding a UK minister’s involvement, Witkoff expressed gratitude for the UK’s pivotal role in facilitating the progress leading up to the historic event in Israel. Witkoff specifically acknowledged Powell’s dedication and valuable efforts in this process.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson also emphasized the UK’s behind-the-scenes influence in shaping the summit during an interview with Sky News. She recognized the complexity of diplomatic efforts and acknowledged the crucial support from the American government in reaching this point.

Later today, Keir Starmer is anticipated to characterize the Gaza peace summit in Egypt as a crucial step toward ending the prolonged conflict and violence. He traveled to Sharm El-Sheikh to participate in the peace plan signing ceremony alongside US President Donald Trump, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In his anticipated address, Starmer is expected to emphasize the determination to capitalize on this opportunity for lasting peace and security in the region. The UK pledges to assist in the subsequent phases of negotiations to ensure the successful implementation of the peace plan, enabling both sides to rebuild their lives securely.

During the summit, Starmer intends to announce a £20 million UK aid package, part of a broader £116 million commitment, to support essential services like water, sanitation, and hygiene for civilians in Gaza. This aid aims to reach tens of thousands of individuals affected by the conflict in the region.
