“Massive AWS Outage Disrupts Popular Websites”

Published:

Numerous websites and applications are experiencing downtime today due to a widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage. AWS, which underpins the infrastructure of many digital platforms, is currently encountering technical difficulties, resulting in a significant number of online services operating below par.

Impacted services include popular platforms like Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, and Sky, along with the online platforms and applications of major UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. The HMRC website has also been affected by the outage.

AWS has acknowledged the issue’s potential cause and states that most services are gradually recovering. In their latest update, they mentioned, “We are witnessing improvements across most affected AWS Services. Global services and features reliant on US-EAST-1 have also been restored. We are actively working towards complete resolution and will provide updates as new information becomes available.”

Earlier reports indicate that the error rates for DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region are linked to DNS resolution issues. This problem is impacting various AWS Services in the same region, affecting services like IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables.

Downdetector recorded a surge in reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 incidents related to AWS. An HMRC spokesperson confirmed the online service access problems and mentioned collaborating with AWS to address the global issues. Lloyds Bank also acknowledged service disruptions due to AWS problems, apologizing for the inconvenience and assuring customers of efforts to restore services promptly.
