Belgium Rugby Mourns Loss of Head Coach Warren Abrahams

Published:

Former Wales Women’s head coach, Warren Abrahams, has sadly passed away at the age of 43.

Abrahams was coaching the Belgium national women’s sevens team in a tournament in Nairobi, Kenya, when he suddenly died.

The Belgium Rugby Federation announced the tragic news, stating, “Belgium Rugby is mourning the sudden loss of Warren Abrahams, head coach of the BelSevens.”

Efforts have been made to provide support to the players and staff during this difficult time, with the team having returned to Belgium and receiving ongoing psychological assistance to cope with the situation.

The exact cause of Abrahams’ death has not been disclosed.

Originally from the Western Cape in South Africa, Abrahams played rugby for Durbanville‐Bellville and Stellenbosch University before transitioning to coaching.

During his career, the 43-year-old coached Wales Women for a period of nine months. He also held coaching positions with USA sevens, the England Sevens men’s team, and the Harlequins academy.

Harlequins, Abrahams’ former club, expressed their condolences on social media, highlighting his significant impact during his time with the Academy from 2011 to 2019.

Following his appointment as Wales Women’s head coach in 2020, Abrahams took over from Rowland Phillips but faced challenges, resulting in a winless streak during the Six Nations amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, both Abrahams and the WRU parted ways.
