Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with the architects of India’s digital identification system while endeavoring to support the government’s contentious proposals. While advocating for mandatory ID for work purposes, Mr. Starmer also highlighted the potential benefits of voluntary ID, suggesting it could streamline various administrative processes. Drawing inspiration from India’s success with their ID system, Mr. Starmer expressed the importance of discussing ID-related matters during his visit.
Mr. Starmer’s remarks coincided with his arrival in Mumbai, where he received a warm welcome from the Indian government. The city’s streets were adorned with posters featuring Mr. Starmer alongside PM Modi, showcasing the camaraderie between the two leaders.
During a visit to a football ground in Mumbai, Mr. Starmer engaged in light banter with former England striker Michael Owen, who humorously referenced scoring goals against Mr. Starmer’s favorite football club, Arsenal. The Prime Minister also interacted with children participating in a football program supported by the Premier League.
When questioned about urging Mr. Modi to cease purchasing Russian oil, Mr. Starmer reiterated the UK’s firm support for Ukraine and its efforts to maintain a lasting ceasefire.
