A high-end dining establishment, La Popote, has introduced an exclusive menu featuring only water, with prices for bottles reaching up to £19. Co-owner Joseph Rawlins collaborated with renowned British water sommelier Doran Binder to curate this distinctive selection at their French fine dining restaurant in Cheshire.
Rawlins expressed their aim to offer a unique experience, emphasizing Binder’s passion for water and the belief that not all water is the same. He highlighted the decision to launch the water-only menu in response to growing interest, stating that they would not have pursued it if there had been any negative feedback.
The menu offers a diverse range of water options at varying price points to cater to different preferences. The idea for the water menu was initially proposed by Binder three years ago, but it was only recently approved after a water tasting session earlier this year.
Binder has spent the last seven months developing the menu, which features seven premium waters sourced from various regions in Europe, including both still and sparkling varieties.
The cost of the water starts at £5 for Binder’s Crag Spring Water and goes up to £19 for a bottle of Portuguese sparkling water called The Palace of Vidago. The restaurant shared the water menu in a recent post, sparking mixed reactions from viewers, with some questioning the concept of paying high prices for water while others welcomed the idea of having a dedicated water menu.
Various opinions were shared, with one individual expressing frustration at the lack of emphasis on non-alcoholic options in dining experiences, while another criticized the extravagance of spending on imported water when clean water access is a global concern.
In response to the reactions, a user suggested donating an equivalent amount to water charities if one could afford expensive bottled water. The Mirror has reached out to La Popote for further comments on this initiative.
