A prominent figure in Toronto Blue Jays history, John Albert Martinez, known as Buck, was officially inducted into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence during the weekend’s festivities. Martinez, a cancer survivor, has had a multifaceted career with the Blue Jays, serving as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster for nearly five decades.
To commemorate their 50th season, the Blue Jays introduced the Hall of Excellence as a tribute to the organization’s most influential individuals. Located in a section behind right field at Rogers Centre, the hall honors 11 distinguished figures previously recognized in the Level of Excellence.
Martinez, aged 77, was celebrated before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. Having retired from his broadcasting role last winter after a long tenure, Martinez expressed his surprise and gratitude for the recognition, stating, “Today blew me away. I didn’t have any grasp of the magnitude of today.”

Reflecting on the impact he has had on fans, Martinez shared a touching moment when a newcomer, Brett Bateman, approached him to convey his appreciation for Martinez’s contributions to the Blue Jays community. Martinez also recounted an encounter in England where his recognizable voice drew attention from passersby, highlighting the deep connection Canadians have with the team.
Joining a prestigious group of honorees, Martinez now stands alongside other Blue Jays legends in the Hall of Excellence, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and Roy Halladay. The Level of Excellence, which currently resides within the stadium bowl, will be relocated next season to ensure fans can continue to appreciate the legacy of these esteemed individuals.
