Ukrainian authorities announced on Wednesday that they are probing high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. This development follows the recent dismissal of the country’s defence minister, who called for national elections amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The investigation is targeting an alleged criminal group led by a current and former lawmaker, reportedly involving officials from the presidential office. More information on this operation will be disclosed later, as stated in a joint announcement by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
While President Zelenskyy has not publicly addressed the probe, he did issue a decree removing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation poses a challenge to Zelenskyy’s political standing, following previous controversies involving key members of his team.
In response to the recent turmoil, Ukraine’s parliament approved Yevhenii Khmara as the new defence minister. Zelenskyy nominated Khmara, who had been serving as the acting minister, subsequent to the ousting of Mykhailo Fedorov in July.
Fedorov, in a video message released late Tuesday, advocated for holding elections in Ukraine, citing the need to restore democratic processes amid the ongoing conflict. The former defence minister highlighted governance challenges and corruption issues within Ukraine’s system, emphasizing the country’s weakened capacity to combat the war.
Despite recent military successes, including targeted strikes on Russian oil facilities and disruptions to enemy advances, Ukraine continues to face obstacles in peace negotiations and defense capabilities. The country’s innovative drone technology has proven effective in its military operations, but challenges remain in securing international support for its defense initiatives.
As tensions persist between Ukraine and Russia, President Putin has questioned Zelenskyy’s legitimacy, further complicating diplomatic efforts. The ongoing conflict has intensified, with both sides engaging in strategic military actions and facing significant losses on the battlefield.
