“Canada World Cup Star Eustaquio Joins Swansea City”

Published:

Stephen Eustaquio swiftly embraced the opportunity to join Swansea City without hesitation. Fresh from aiding Canada in reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, the midfielder was enticed by the prospect of assisting the Welsh club in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League, as well as reuniting with a familiar coach.

Swansea City officially confirmed the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto, sealing a two-year deal with an option for an additional season. Eustaquio emphasized that the chance to collaborate with head coach Vitor Matos, a former colleague at Porto, significantly influenced his decision.

Expressing his contentment with the move, Eustaquio stated, “It was almost a no-brainer for me. I am confident in what I can achieve here, so I am delighted with my choice.” Despite finishing 11th in the Championship last season, well below the promotion playoff positions, Eustaquio acknowledges the challenging path ahead for Swansea to reclaim their Premier League status.

“The allure of being part of a prominent club striving to return to the top league was a major draw for me,” he remarked. “Although the journey will be arduous, approaching each game with focus could lead to a remarkable atmosphere in the stadium, potentially resulting in a remarkable season. Who knows?”

Originally from Leamington, Ont., with Portuguese roots, Eustaquio relocated to Portugal during his childhood. Prior to his stint at Porto, he played for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico. Accumulating over 150 appearances during his four-and-a-half years at Porto, Eustaquio also had a brief loan spell with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC earlier this year.

With 61 caps for Canada, Eustaquio has represented the nation in the last two World Cups. His standout moment at this summer’s tournament was scoring the decisive goal in Canada’s 1-0 triumph over South Africa in the Round of 32, before Canada was ousted by Morocco. Eustaquio, often assuming the captain’s role in the absence of Alphonso Davies due to injury, reflected on the memorable experience: “This summer was phenomenal. It was a dream fulfilled for us as a nation to progress so far in such a prestigious tournament. Contributing to breaking records and scoring against South Africa was a moment of immense joy for me.”

Eustaquio is set to don the No. 46 jersey for Swansea and could potentially make his debut in the upcoming match against Derby County this weekend.
