The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has initiated an inquiry into the stabbing incident that occurred on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The flight was diverted and landed in Saudi Arabia following a struggle in the cockpit, as reported by the state news agency on Thursday.
Investigations in the UAE are underway to determine the circumstances and motives behind the incident, focusing on whether it had any connection to terrorist activities, premeditation, or external direction. The Emirati judicial authorities have asserted jurisdiction over the case due to the aircraft’s registration in the UAE and its operation under the UAE flag, applying UAE laws to crimes committed on board, even if outside the country’s territory.
Speculation surrounds the co-pilot’s intentions and background in the assault on the captain of the aircraft, with Israeli officials suggesting it was an attempt to crash the plane carrying over 170 individuals. Concerns have been raised about the weapon used in the attack, particularly if it was a knife, and how it was smuggled onto the aircraft without detection.
Following the incident, the wounded captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers to subdue the attacker, leading to a safe landing in Saudi Arabia by a reserve crew. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the attacker, identified as an Omani national, was under investigation in Saudi Arabia and likely to be transferred to the UAE for further proceedings.
Saudi Arabia has not released any statements regarding its investigations, while Israeli authorities have labeled the co-pilot as a terrorist for the alleged attempt to crash the plane. The Flight FZ1073 descended rapidly over Saudi Arabia before passengers and crew intervened to regain control and land the aircraft safely.
Both Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have praised the captain, Smit Machchhar, as a hero for his actions during the incident. Machchhar, an Indian national, is reported to be in good health and recovering well, with the Indian Embassy in the UAE closely monitoring his medical care.
In addition to lauding the heroic actions of the captain, Israel has commended the passengers who assisted in subduing the attacker. The incident has raised security concerns in Israel ahead of upcoming elections, with the country’s security becoming a prominent issue in the political discourse.
