A tragic incident occurred early Sunday in Hungary as a passenger bus carrying Polish tourists veered off the highway near Mezokeresztes, overturning in a ditch. The crash resulted in the death of 12 individuals and left several others injured.
Authorities reported that the bus, which was traveling eastbound on the M3 motorway, flipped over around 140 kilometers east of Budapest at approximately 1 a.m. The driver, suspected of falling asleep at the wheel, has been detained by the police.
The Hungary National Directorate for Disaster Management confirmed that among the 59 occupants on board, including 57 passengers and two drivers, a number of passengers were trapped beneath the overturned bus. The Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that all individuals aboard held Polish citizenship.
The passengers were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as stated by the regional government in Rzeszow, Poland. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar noted in a Facebook post that at least 10 individuals sustained serious injuries. He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and commended the efforts of the rescue teams involved.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki also conveyed his heartfelt condolences, expressing deep sorrow for the tragic incident. The community mourns the loss and stands in solidarity with the affected families during this difficult time.
