Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Czech player Barbora Krejcikova progressed to the next round of the Cincinnati Open after defeating the fourth-seeded duo of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the women’s doubles Round of 32 on Monday. The match lasted an hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up. They are set to compete against the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 scheduled for Tuesday.
In another match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani of Italy secured a victory in one hour and 29 minutes against Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday evening.
Although Fernandez and Errani dominated the first set in just 31 minutes, their opponents fought back in the second set, even reaching a 6-5 lead and serving for the win before faltering. The Canadian-Italian duo recorded two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the 34 in the match. They are scheduled to face Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia in the upcoming Round of 16.
Fernandez had previously lost to Xiyu Wang from China in the women’s singles event’s second round on Sunday.
